This Dhobighat in Mumbai is located at Satrasta chowk near Mahalaxmi Railway station of the western Railway and this open-air Dhobighat attracts people from the flyover at Mahalaxmi station. From morning till early evening, the colorful clothes bring joy to the mind of a spectator which is why it is also one of the famous Tourist spots. Both Indian and as well as foreign tourist visit this part of Mumbai and the Nehru science center which was built in 1977 at the Worli. Along with this, the Haji Ali Dargah of the Muslim community at the sea is also an attraction for people belonging to all communities who prefer to visit the same. At around a distance of approximately 10 to 15 minutes from Dhobighat, there is the famous Jijamata Park at Byculla with a Zoo. Here there are wild animals, domestic animals, and exotic colorful Birds. The visitor to this Zoo varies from kids to adult.

The Dhobighat has two Gunnies Book of World Records in the years 2011 and 2013 with 496 people washing clothes with their hands in one place and as the largest outdoor laundry in the world respectively. Dhobighat area is famous for Photo shoots students from all corners of the country came here for their college projects. This place is also famous for Film shooting such as Shoot out at Wadala, and Amir Khan’s movie Dhobighat, several Hindi and Marathi movies have been shot here.

Dhobighat is Divided into two divisions one Big Dhobighat with 631 washing stones and the small Dhobighat with 100 washing stones. The planning of Dhobighat is looked at by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in which rent of each wash stone is collected for repair and maintenance, water supply to Dhobighat and transfer of wash stone. Today 2000-3000 people work in this field who work for 14 to 16 hours per day.

Today as science and technology progress the dhobi business also see these change. The Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation has reduced the water supply and have changed the timings as a result of this many Dhobis have stopped washing clothes by their hands. The dhobis are replaced by washing machine and drying machine so more work has to be done in less time.
